It’s More Than Just That?

“Trust me, a koi pond will be great for our backyard!”

Tim mutes the news on the tv and turns to look at Julie from his spot on the couch. “A what now?” Julie smiles, “ A koi pond! Our friends, the Jacobson’s, got one recently and it looks amazing!”

“Really? Isn’t a fish pond basically a hole with water in it?” Tim asks.

“They’re way more than that! Well, it can be if it’s a good one. The cheap ones are basically what you just said,” Julie says excitedly. She gets out her phone, sits next to him, and pulls up pictures and stuff to show Tim as she tells him what koi ponds are.

This Is What A Koi Pond Is

A koi pond is a decorative water feature found in commercial buildings and backyards. A quality koi pond is built as an ecosystem pond. This means it has plants, rocks, gravel, filters, and a dash of algae. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and costs.

Tim’s eyes widen. “Wow, that’s way better than I was picturing in my head!”

Julie scrolls down a bit to find a video. “Let’s watch this video, it shows us a pond build from behind-the-scenes and explains them well.”

Natural-looking fish ponds can make it seem as though you built your house around it. The different parts of an ecosystem pond give it a more natural look and lower the amount of maintenance you need to do.

Koi ponds can also give more of a modern look to backyards with a man-made design. These usually have a raised border made from slabs of stone.

“They do look great, but something like that can’t be cheap or easy to take care of,” Tim points out. “And what about building…install…constructing one? How do they do that? What about cost? Sizes? Safety for the little ones? And don’t forget…”

Tim pauses and looks down sheepishly as he realizes he’s pelting Julie with questions.

She smiles at him happily. “I have those same questions too! Here, at the bottom of the page, there are a bunch of links that can answer our questions.”
