Test Your Pond for a Leak

Follow the steps below to learn how to detect and perform a pond leak test.

One of the most common problems we hear is from pond owners is “my pond leaks.” Whether the water is dropping six inches overnight or a foot every hour, these things happen when the pond isn’t installed correctly.

Most of the time the leak is in either:

  • The Stream
  • The Waterfall
  • Underground Plumbing
  • The Filter

How Do I Perform A Leak Test?

The first step to determining where the leak is is to perform the following:

  1. Turn off the water source/stream and fill the pond to the top.
  2. Let the pond sit stagnate for a couple of days and check if the water level has dropped. If so, measure the amount. If not, then the pond itself is NOT the source of the leak and proceed to step 3.
  3.  Turn on the water source/stream and fill the pond back up to the top (since when the waterfall or stream runs, the level drops a bit). Measure the water loss in 24 hour increments.

So To Recap:

If the pond holds water without the waterfall running, then you’ll know that the leak is not in the pond itself and is elsewhere. This step saves a lot of time and money.

If the pond only loses water while running, then you have narrowed down the leak to one of the following areas:

  • Underground Plumbing
  • The Filter
  • The Waterfall
  • The Stream

Once you have these results, simply send us a picture of your entire pond to include the waterfall, stream and filter. Add the results so we can discuss the solutions to your leak!
